In the LeMons competition, race cars are judged upon entry. Judges look over the car and determine whether the car is worth more than $500 (excluding the safty equipment such as tires, wheels, brakes, roll cage, harness, seat). If you bought a car from a friend for $500 and the judges think it’s worth more, for every $10 over the $500 limit your team is penalized 1 lap. The whole Idea is to get a total p.o.s. car and attempt to drive it for 24hrs. I dont think this is even a race as much as it is a contest of who ever lives to tell the tale.
Car update: I have not talked to my co-worker yet, but his E30 BMW was totaled about two years ago. He was driving through a parking lot when a lady backed out of a spot and hit him in the rear quarter panel. The price to fix the car vs the worth of the car = totaled. It drives fine and the damage is only cosmetic. It is a 325e w/5spd. I think he wants a couple of hundred dollars for it.
